Case Study in Commercial Imagery: Colchester and Ipswich Hospital Charity – The Time Garden

I was recently approached by Colchester and Ipswich Hospital Charity with a very special project: to capture commercial imagery for the launch of their new Time Garden, which officially opens on 20 October.
The Time Garden has been created as a private, non clinical space for families, patients and staff, a place to step away from the intensity of hospital life and spend time together. From the very beginning my brief was clear. The photographs needed to convey support, compassion and empathy. They needed to show how the charity’s work elevates the patient and family experience in ways that go beyond medicine.
Photography guided by emotion
The charity chose me because of my ability to use emotion as my guide. My role was to be discreet and sensitive, to capture moments of intimacy and connection that reflect the essence of the Time Garden. Images of hand holding, listening and reassuring were just as important as wider shots of the space itself.
The Time Garden is intended to be timeless, a space to breathe, to connect, to feel love and companionship. It is a place where families can share precious moments, where staff can support in a more human setting, and where milestones such as weddings or even animal visits can take place. My photographs had to communicate this sense of sanctuary, as well as the wider impact of the charity’s work.
Creating legacy through imagery
Part of the brief was to highlight legacy. I wanted to capture the idea of one generation sharing time with another, a grandmother with a grandchild for example. These images not only reflect love and continuity but also remind us that the donations made to the charity create experiences and memories that last well beyond a hospital stay.
Alongside the Time Garden I also captured commercial imagery within more clinical settings such as the children’s department and corridors, working the team. These photographs will be used to show the broader impact of the charity’s support services and to encourage further donations to their legacy plan.
Empathy, Trust and Understanding
For me, this project was about more than photography. It was about empathy, trust and understanding how important it is to represent the experiences of patients, families and staff with dignity and care.
The Colchester and Ipswich Hospital Charity does incredible work, and the Time Garden is a beautiful example of how donations directly improve lives. I am proud to have played a small part in telling this story through images.
