Personal Branding Photography Is About More Than a Headshot

When people hear the phrase personal branding photography, they often assume it is something reserved for large companies, high profile executives or influencers. In reality, it is just as important, if not more so, for the people who run their own businesses because personal branding photography is about more than a headshot.

One of the things I enjoy most about personal branding photography is solving problems that my clients often do not realise they have. They may know they need new photographs, but not where they will be used, what message they should communicate or how to make them feel natural rather than posed. That is where my experience comes in. I think beyond the obvious headshot, considering how your images will work across your website, LinkedIn profile, press features, speaking engagements and social media. I look for opportunities that tell a richer story and create photographs with purpose. Sometimes that means suggesting a different location, changing the light or encouraging a shot that was never part of the original plan. My job is to make sure you leave with images that not only look beautiful but work hard for your business.

If you are a consultant, coach, author, speaker, creative or freelancer, you are your brand. Your experience, personality and approach are often the reasons clients choose to work with you over someone else. Before they pick up the phone or send an enquiry, they have probably visited your website, looked at your LinkedIn profile and scrolled through your social media. The images they see help shape that first impression.

Good personal branding photography is about much more than having a professional headshot. It is about telling your story. It should give people a sense of who you are, how you work and what it would be like to work with you. The right photographs help build trust before you’ve even had your first conversation.

One of the biggest misconceptions about branding photography is that clients need to arrive with a detailed brief or a carefully planned shot list. That simply is not the case.

Many people tell me they have no idea where to start. They know they need professional photographs, but they are unsure what would work, where they should be taken or how they want to be portrayed. That is exactly why they hire a professional photographer.

My role is not simply to turn up with a camera. It is to get to know the person behind the business, understand what they want to communicate and create photographs that feel authentic rather than staged. I guide the session from beginning to end, suggesting locations, looking for opportunities and capturing those natural moments that often become the strongest images. My clients trust me to see things they might not see themselves, and that trust is often where the magic happens.

A recent personal branding session with Stephen Norris, Vistage Chair at Milsoms and founder of Punk Rock Media, is a perfect example.

Stephen needed a collection of images to support a book launch, press coverage and award submissions. Rather than simply creating a series of formal portraits, we focused on producing a varied collection of photographs that reflected both his professionalism and his personality. The aim was to create images that felt genuine and could be used across different platforms while still telling a consistent story.

By the end of the session, Stephen had chosen twelve photographs that covered everything he felt he needed. They were strong images, each serving a purpose.

However, there was one photograph that stood out to me. It was not the most obvious choice, nor was it the most traditional business portrait. Instead, it captured something much more important. It showed the warmth, character and authenticity that make Stephen who he is. It told a story that went beyond his job title.

I encouraged him to include it. He trusted my judgement, even though it had not been one of his original favourites. Looking back, it became one of the defining images from the session because it revealed the person behind the business, not just the professional in front of the camera.

That experience perfectly sums up what personal branding photography should be. It is not about creating polished images that could belong to anyone. It is about creating photographs that are unmistakably yours. The best branding images are the ones that make people stop, connect and feel as though they already know you.

Stephen kindly shared these words after the session.

“I needed photographs that told the truth about who I am, not a corporate headshot that could belong to anyone. Cherry got that immediately. The brief was straightforward: a book launch, press, awards. The result was anything but ordinary.

She found a location that fitted the story, worked with complete ease on the day, and pushed for shots I wouldn’t have thought to ask for. The one she insisted on including ended up being exactly right. That instinct is rare.

If you need photography that has character and genuine warmth behind the lens, Cherry is the person. Exceptional work.”

For me, that testimonial is about far more than taking a good photograph. It reflects the relationship that develops during a branding session. My clients do not need to know exactly what they want before they arrive. They simply need to trust the process. My job is to help them feel at ease, to notice the moments they cannot see themselves and to create images that genuinely represent who they are.

If you’re a solo entrepreneur or small business owner, personal branding photography is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your business. Authentic, professional images help people connect with you, remember you and feel confident about working with you. In a world where first impressions are often made online, that connection can make all the difference.
