Headshot Photoshoot Tips Three Things I Tell Every Client Before a Headshot

Headshot Photoshoot Tips. Preparing for a headshot photoshoot can feel like a big deal. Whether it is for your website, your social media or your wider marketing, there is often a pressure to “get it right”. What to wear, how to look, what to expect.

Over time, I have found there are three simple things that make the biggest difference. They are not complicated, but they are often overlooked. And when you get them right, everything else becomes much easier.

1. Wear what you feel most comfortable in and represents how you wish to be seen to your clients

This is one of the most important conversations I have with clients. There is often a temptation to buy something new or choose an outfit that feels more “professional” than what you would normally wear. But the problem is, if it does not feel like you, it will not come across naturally in your headshot and portrait images.

Instead, think about what you wear when you are at your best with clients.

  1. What do you feel confident in?
  2. What reflects your brand?
  3. What do people recognise you in?

That is what you should bring to a personal branding, headshot and portrait photoshoot.

Confidence and personality should come through in your headshot. If you feel comfortable, it shows. If you feel like you are trying too hard, that shows too.

2. Do Not Get a Haircut the Day Before

This one surprises people, but it makes a real difference. A fresh haircut can often look too sharp or not quite settled. It can feel unfamiliar and that slight discomfort can come across in your images. Giving it a few days allows everything to soften and sit naturally. It feels more like you, and that is exactly what we want. The same applies to anything new. If it is not something you are used to, it is better to test it beforehand rather than introduce it right before a shoot.

3. You are not “not photogenic”

I hear this all the time.

  • “I am not photogenic.”
  • “I hate having my photo taken.”
  • “I never like how I look in pictures.”

The truth is, this is almost always down to previous experiences. Being in front of a camera can feel unnatural if you are not guided properly. If you are rushed, posed awkwardly or not made to feel comfortable, the results will reflect that. A good photoshoot should feel relaxed, natural and supportive. It is about creating an environment where you can be yourself, not trying to force something that does not feel right. When that happens, the difference in the images is clear.

Your First Impression Matters

For many businesses, your photography is the first interaction someone has with you.

Before a conversation, before a meeting, before any trust is built, people are already forming an opinion.

  1. Do you look approachable?
  2. Do you feel professional?
  3. Do you feel genuine?

Your images play a huge role in answering those questions.

That is why it is so important that they feel real, confident and aligned with who you are.

It Is More Than Just Taking a Photo

At Simply C Photography, the focus is not just on taking images. It is about helping you feel comfortable, confident and clear in how you present yourself. From what you wear, to how you are guided during the shoot, through to how the images are used afterwards, everything is considered. Because when you get it right, your photography becomes a powerful part of your brand.

Final Thoughts

  1. If you are preparing for a shoot, keep it Simply simple.
  2. Be yourself.
  3. Wear what feels right.
  4. Give yourself the best chance to feel comfortable.
  5. That is where the best natural headshots and portrait images come from.
