Use product photography to elevate your brand

Commercial product photography not only is fundamental to capturing attention but increasing sales.

We can clearly demonstrate that by asking the question "what was the last online product you bought? Did you decide and buy, or not buy it, based on a photograph on a website?"

Have you ever thought about the value of these images as part of your sales process? People make purchasing decisions every day based on product photography so these images have some serious work to do to convert into sales!

That is where investing in a commercial product photographer is fundamental. But the first stage of any shoot is a conversation to decide what images will be needed. This will involve looking at where they will be used. In a catalogue? For social media? As advertising? From that we can then understand and identify the best way they should be photographed. With a white background? Or with lifestyle images? (You can find out more about the different types of product shoots and the decisions behind them here.)

A great example of a product shoot was my recent commission with Soft Floor .

The original brief was straightforward: create clean, crisp images of their children’s play mats from the Softfloor Kids range and a cork yoga mat. Set against a white background, simple but essential product shots like these are key for online stores, marketing materials, and building customer trust.

When it came to the cork mat, I was keen to bring in a more creative approach and elevate this to reach a wider target audience beyond the white background product shots.

This led to a new collaboration with StudioFlex, where we organised a lifestyle shoot to show the yoga mat in use, highlighting its natural look and feel in a real world setting. Working in the studio brought a fresh dynamic to the project, adding movement and context to the product lifestyle imagery. Instead of just a white background, which is perfect for E-Commerce, we created a natural angle. Taking the mat to the studio didn’t just make it look good; it shifted how the brand could talk about it being utilised, visually engaging a buyer instantly as they could envisage themselves using in their lives and opening new ways to market a static product that could have otherwise been just another item on a shelf.

It's funny how sometimes the most straightforward brief is the one that leads to the most unexpected results. What started as a clear white background studio photoshoot quickly grew into something more that attracted more sales by grabbing the audience attention immediately and maximised sales. It’s a reminder that every product photoshoot regardless of the product can create opportunities for new ideas, new imagery, partnerships and new ways of standing out that increases sales.

This is what people often miss about product photography: it’s not just about getting something ‘ready for the website.’ Nor is it Simply having static white background images. When you approach it with curiosity, creativity and a bit of boldness, product photoshoots can be the starting point for new ideas, new collaborations and new ways of seeing what a brand and product is capable of.

As a photographer who specialises in helping clients to think beyond a single shoot, collaborations like these are one of the things I love most about commercial branding in product photography. When you can collaborate and bring together different skills, fresh energy and a shared vision, it shows in the final results.
