Have you ever considered the effect of screen time and mobile phone use on mental health? Maybe you’ve seen one of the many articles and features released about the ongoing problem. Studies that link phone use with poorer mental health, the contribution of screen light to chronic sleep deprivation and the negative effects on those constantly scrolling their social media. In fact, there seems to be very little positivity to link with those electronic devices that rarely leave our side.

According to the Mental Health charity Mind the number of 16- to 24-year-olds experiencing depression or anxiety is on the rise and screen usage has been linked to social isolation, cyber bullying and sleep disruption. Likewise, studies have shown that screen time among adults has grown significantly post-COVID with studies reporting that some adults are looking at screens for 11 hours or more a day and many noticing a negative impact on their health.

In an age where screens have become a constant feature, we often forget the sheer importance of reconnecting with nature and the great outdoors. It’s vital to understand that our digital world can take a toll on our mental well-being. In the midst of this digital whirlwind, I felt inspired to create Simply Connecting, a fine art photography project that offers a refreshing and much-needed break from our digital lives.

Simply Connecting is so much more than a collection of photographs; it’s a breath of fresh air designed to bring well-being and mindfulness into our workplace routines. This captivating series features a dozen unique images, designed to be printed on acrylic in a large-scale format, making them perfect for brightening up receptions and meeting rooms. These artworks remind us of the beauty of the natural world, effortlessly bringing the outdoors in.

In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with digital distractions, these breathtaking photographic pieces serve as a gentle reminder of the peace and tranquility found in nature. Each image captures the essence of the great outdoors, and the vibrant colours, intricate details, and immersive qualities of these photographs let us take a mini sabbatical from our screens and dive headfirst into the wonders of the natural world.

Simply Connecting doesn’t just hang on walls; it transforms ordinary spaces into oases of inspiration and reflection. As employees and visitors gravitate towards these artworks, they spark conversations and create connections. These pieces become conversation starters, nudging individuals to step away from their screens and engage in meaningful discussions about nature, mindfulness, and well-being. And their purpose isn’t limited to offices or workspaces; they present a versatile solution that can seamlessly integrate into various design schemes curated by interior designers or serve as captivating centerpieces in showhomes. These images are adaptable and can be sized to suit a wide range of environments, enhancing the aesthetics of any space they inhabit, transforming mundane settings into havens of inspiration and introspection.

I truly believe that Simply Connecting offers a much-needed escape from the overwhelming world of screen time. It invites individuals to hit pause, reflect, and rediscover the wonder and peace that nature offers. By strategically placing these awe-inspiring artworks in corporate settings, businesses and organisations can actively contribute to the well-being of their employees, nurturing a healthier work environment and encouraging a deeper connection to the world beyond the screen.
