Stale Shouldn’t Be a Word Associated with Food: The Importance of Keeping Your Food Photography Fresh

When you think about food, words like “fresh,” then “vibrant,” and “delicious” should come to mind – not “stale.” But if your food images aren’t up-to-date, that’s exactly what they become. Professional food photography isn’t just about making dishes look good; it’s about keeping your business visually appealing and relevant, whatever you’re serving.
Seasonal Influences: 365 Days of Tasty Visuals
The food and hospitality industry is one of the most seasonally influenced sectors. Do you fancy a salad at Christmas? Or a hearty stew in the middle of summer? Updated images reflect what’s currently available, telling your audience that you’re in tune with their cravings and the time of year.
Seasonal photography can also reflect broader industry trends, using colours (think warm, inviting tones in the autumn, fresh and zesty hues in the summer) and the choice of settings and lighting – working with muted shades of light and cosy indoor images during the winter months and natural light and outdoor opportunities in the summer.
By keeping your images seasonal, you engage your audience and demonstrate your awareness of what they want when they want it.
Food Fashions: Reflecting Trends and Tastes
Food fashions are constantly changing and what’s on our plates is often shaped by cultural influences, global events, and even social media. Television chefs like Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson have all played a part in steering food trends, from classic comfort foods to modern fusion cuisine.
Refreshed images are a way to show your customers that you’re keeping up with these trends. Whether you're embracing plant-based options, featuring street food-inspired dishes, or highlighting global flavours, your photography can position your business as current and innovative.
And it isn't just dishes that need to reflect the seasons and markets – what about packaging and advertising boards? In fact, anything that's relevant to food should be seen as an evolving commodity.
Reflecting Your Business Evolution
Your business will also evolve over time. Maybe you will rebrand? Introduce a new logo? Redesign your venue space? Change your plating styles or invest in new linens and cutlery?
Consistent, up-to-date imagery reinforces your brand identity, and your image library should grow alongside these changes to reflect your business accurately.
Staying Relevant in a Competitive Industry
People are bombarded with images on a daily basis and staying visually relevant is essential. Outdated photography can make your business feel out of touch, even if your menu is Simply top-notch. By regularly refreshing your images, you send a clear message that you’re paying attention to what customers want and you’re committed to quality in every aspect of your business. This in turn creates trust, and we all know how important that is in business.
Partnering with a Professional Food Photographer
When I work with food clients, from restaurants to hotels, food writers to cafés, I do more than take pictures; I become an extension of my client’s brand and their marketing team. I aim for a long-term partnership that ensures I understand their business, their audience, and their vision.
I have recently enjoyed working with Notcutts once again and our established relationship means that I can help them stay on top of seasonal campaigns and highlight menu updates whilst making sure their visuals always feel fresh and relevant.

FAQs
How long does a typical food photography session take?
Every shoot is different, and each job and client brings its own brief, which affects the time taken. It can also depend on whether the client wants some more input from me in terms of branding and composition, and obviously, the type of food we are photographing to make everything look its very best.
Do you offer ongoing photography services for seasonal menu updates?
Absolutely! Food is one of those subjects that is affected by seasonality. After all, no one wants a salad at Christmas. When I work with a food venue, I always advocate regularly updating the images to reflect a changing menu and to demonstrate 'freshness' through visuals. After all, if images become old and outdated, what does that say about the menu?
How do you capture steam, drizzles, or melting effects in food photography?
It is important that the food images captured are a real representation of the food served; authenticity is key. Pre-planning and a scheduled brief can help keep this feasible. Visually representing each dish accurately is paramount, but on occasion, techniques can be implemented without altering the integrity of the dish.
