Why I Never Niched Down and Why It Makes Me a Better Commercial Photographer

Recently, I had the pleasure of being invited onto the Commercial Photographer Podcast to talk about a subject that comes up surprisingly often within the photography industry: whether photographers need to specialise in one niche in order to build a successful business.
It is a topic that generates plenty of debate, particularly as many business coaches encourage photographers to focus on a single sector, refine their message and become known for one thing.
While I completely understand that approach, my own experience has been rather different. Looking back over the years, I have realised that what has helped Simply C Photography grow has never been specialising in one type of photography. Instead, it has been understanding businesses, the people behind them and the different ways professional photography can help them communicate with confidence.
Before photography became my full time profession, I spent many years working in sales, advertising, IT consultancy and interior design. At the time, I never imagined those experiences would shape the way I work as a commercial photographer, but they have become some of the most valuable lessons I bring to every client. They taught me how businesses market themselves, how customers make decisions and how organisations build trust with their audiences.
Photography became another way of telling those stories, rather than simply an opportunity to create beautiful images.
That distinction is an important one because commercial photography has never been simply about producing photographs. Every image has a purpose. It may be encouraging a family to enquire about a care home, persuading someone to book a luxury holiday let, introducing a consultant to a potential client or helping a manufacturer demonstrate the scale and quality of their operation. Although the environments and industries may be very different, the underlying objective is almost always the same: to build confidence and create a connection before a conversation has even begun.
Perhaps that is why I have never felt the need to define myself by one particular subject. Over the years I have photographed everything from manufacturing facilities and engineering companies to boutique hotels, care providers, restaurants, commercial interiors and personal branding sessions. On paper those sectors appear to have very little in common, yet every commission begins with exactly the same conversation. I want to understand who the business is trying to reach, what makes it different and how the photography will support its wider marketing. Once those questions have been answered, the camera becomes a tool rather than the starting point.
Working across different industries has also given me something I value enormously: perspective. Every project teaches me something that I can carry into the next one.
Photographing beautifully designed interiors develops an eye for composition, texture and the way natural light influences a space. Spending time in care homes reinforces the importance of patience, empathy and quietly observing genuine interactions without interrupting them. Editorial portrait sessions constantly remind me that most people don’t enjoy being in front of a camera until they begin to relax and feel comfortable. Industrial environments demand careful planning, adaptability and an awareness of health and safety while still finding creative ways to tell the story of the business.
None of those experiences exist in isolation; they all influence one another, helping me approach each new commission with fresh ideas and a broader understanding of how businesses work.
This is one of the reasons I have always believed that clients choose to work with me at Simply C, for more than the photographs themselves. They are investing in someone who takes the time to understand their business and who recognises that the images need to work far beyond the day of the shoot. A carefully planned commission should produce an image library that supports a website, social media, recruitment campaigns, brochures, PR opportunities and future marketing activity for years to come. Creating that kind of resource requires more than technical knowledge. It requires curiosity, careful planning and an appreciation of how visual storytelling fits into the bigger picture of a business.
The word Simply has always been an important part of my brand because it reflects the experience I want clients to have. Commercial photography can feel like a daunting process, particularly if you have never commissioned it before or you’re unsure what images your business actually needs. My role is to make that process straightforward by asking the right questions, understanding your objectives and creating photographs that genuinely work for your business. The planning, the logistics and the creative thinking all happen behind the scenes so that, from the client’s perspective, everything feels seamless.
Appearing on the podcast gave me the opportunity to reflect on this journey and to explain why I have never seen variety as a weakness. If anything, it has strengthened my ability to understand different organisations and tell authentic stories through photography. Every business is unique, but the need to communicate clearly, build trust and create a lasting first impression is something they all share. That is where Simply C has always found its purpose, not by being known for photographing one particular subject, but by helping businesses tell their story through thoughtful, purposeful imagery.
